The experiment of the first gay hug brought together homosexual and homophobic individuals. Throughout the multiple encounters, all with different people, the results seem to be very similar. In all cases the homophobic person was uncomfortable at first and their body language displayed that. When these people were uncomfortable they were very closed off with their bodies doing things like crossing their arms, maintaining distance and making little eye contact. The homosexual individual was the one who was initiating the contact. They were more comfortable from the beginning, often having very open movements throughout the experiment. After the hug however, the homophobic person became more open, often having open arms and more open minds.

A man gives his shoes to a homeless girl in Rio de Janeiro
The body language displayed by the homeless girl receiving the shoes is very powerful. By the way she has her hand over her face you can tell she may have been crying, many people try to mask emotions by covering their face. With her head down you might assume that she is ashamed of her situation but also grateful of the man who is giving her the shoes. She is very open to the man’s kindness which you can tell by the way she is standing with one arm behind her back. |
Two little kids hugging after they met for the first time.
Kids seem to be the most honest when it comes to expression of emotions through body language. We can’t tell exactly why these two kids were excited to see each other but from their embrace we can tell that their emotions were true. They are so happy to see each other, and even though they are strangers they want to be close. |

On this visit you can tell how excited the girl is to see batman by certain aspects of her body movement. The high five is a clear indicator but on the not so obvious side the girls’ shoulders are shrugged which usually signals excitement. She also has her fist clenched which is another signal towards excitement. |
